My Long Life An Autobiographic Sketch Mary Cowden Clarke 9781141094066 Books
It seems it was the popular thing to do in late Victorian times to write intimate and gossipy accounts of how life was at the start of the century, some are better than others.Mary Cowden-Clarkes account is an above average read. With her husband Charles, she was an author of some account mostly to do with Shakespeare and his heroines. She is not without talent but it is written in the sentimental style of the period and lacks details and dates when some would be very useful.
Mary was born on 22 June 1809 and much of her early life you can get an idea of approximate dates or at least approximate decades. Her description of the local area, merchants, shopkeepers, and some of her neighbours in Oxford Road (it was still on the outskirts of London at this stage.
Her father had artistic propensities and her early life included such luminaries as the poet Leight Hunt and meeting people such as Shelley. Their house was also opposite Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold's and she was able to comment on some of the sightings
It is has been illustrated with some rather naive etchings but they add to the charm.
For those interested in late Georgian London for the middle class artistic this is a very interesting read. Otherwise I would not recommend it. It is definitely a long life she is talking of!
I have the 1896 second edition in green cloth and with gold stamping
